Giza Pyramid Complex & Great Sphinx
Explore the Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis. This site features the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza.
These structures were all constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt.
The complex is situated on the edges of the Western Desert, approximately 9 km (5 mi) west of the Nile River in Giza, and about 13 km (8 mi) southwest of central Cairo.
The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Khafre are the largest pyramids built in ancient Egypt and are widely recognized as symbols of ancient Egypt in the Western imagination. They gained popularity in Hellenistic times, with the Great Pyramid being listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Antipater of Sidon. It is the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still standing.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a mythical creature with a lion's body and a human head, resting on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. It faces directly from West to East.
The face of the Sphinx is widely believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre.
Originally carved from the bedrock, the Sphinx's shape has been restored with added layers of blocks. It measures 73 m (240 ft) in length from paw to tail, stands 20 m (66 ft) high from base to the top of the head, and is 19 m (62 ft) wide at its rear haunches.
It is considered the oldest monumental sculpture in Egypt and is commonly thought to have been built by the ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of Pharaoh Khafre (circa 2558–2532 BC).

The Pyramid of Unas (Nfr swt Wnjs: "Beautiful are the places of Unas") is a smooth-sided pyramid constructed in the 24th century BC for Pharaoh Unas, the ninth and final ruler of the Fifth Dynasty. It is the smallest pyramid from the Old Kingdom but is notable for the discovery of the Pyramid Texts, which are spells for the king's afterlife inscribed on the walls of its subterranean chambers.
These funerary texts, first inscribed in Unas's pyramid, became a tradition in the pyramids of subsequent rulers until the end of the Old Kingdom and continued into the Middle Kingdom through the Coffin Texts, forming the basis of the Book of the Dead.
