Best way to experience the sunrise
TJ_s, October 2026
The sunrise is beautiful however only thing that made the drive up and waking up that early worth it for us was the bike ride down. Amazing views and time slows down on the ride.

Don’t waste your money
Karen_M, October 2026
I went 25 years ago and it was awesome from mountain to sea. Now they have to bus you part of the way and you don’t get to finish at the ocean. We also had way too many safety stops and it made the trip less fun especially for experienced riders. Our tour guide talked way too much about non-important things and too many dad jokes. Tell us about the area the history, not a bunch of dumb jokes. There was also roadwork part of the way down, which interrupted our ride. Should’ve been forewarned about that as we lost quite a bit of our bike ride. Not as great as it used to be. Spend your money on something else.

Solo or Guided?
laura_n, October 2026
Solo vs guided. It was nice to have a guide who has expertly curated the ride. If you like to go fast, go solo. If you are a bit fearful or half asleep, the guided is great. Stellar experience. The guides are amazing and enhance the entire magical moment of the sunrise and decent. Wear shorts under your pants for easier changing. I wore warm socks for gloves. Just do it.

Bucket List Item - Check!
Allyn_G, September 2026
This was a must-see/must-do for us on our first trip to Hawaii. The sunrise over Haleakala is legendary, but for bikers, the steep downhill ride complete with plenty of switchbacks is even more breathtaking and thrilling. We opted for the self-guided tour, but were accompanied by a terrific guide who drove us to the national park and to the staging areas for our descents on very reliable bikes. Before the sun rose, we had terrific views of constellations when the clouds allowed. Then, the sun rose over other-worldly landscape and the reasonably sized mid-September crowd watched God's beauty emerge from the dark, in peace and quiet. It's cold at the summit so dress in layers. You'll probably want to shed a layer or two on the trek to the bottom. We rode through warm sunshine and a couple of downpours and rainbows, smiling all the way... We absolutely recommend this tour.

Worth the 3:00 a.m. wake-up call!
Melissa_C, September 2026
Depending on where you’re staying, you’ll need to get up at *at least* 2:00. We were staying in Ka’anapali (about an hour away), so we were up at 1:00. I can say, unequivocally, that it was 100% worth it. Our guide was super knowledgeable (both on the terrain we were going to cover and Hawaiian culture), and good-natured and fun. We visited Maui just a couple of weeks after Hurricane Lowell hit the island so they’d had lots of rain. But we lucked out and the skies were clear as a bell (I cannot remember the last time I saw so many stars!) We reached the summit and headed to the lookout. Even though it was still summer (mid-September) it was COLD. I had on two shirts + a sweatshirt, long underwear, sweatpants, and had a wind suit on over it all, and I was still freezing. So bundle up! The sunrise began just after 5:00 and was full at 6:13. Words cannot describe the spectacular beauty. Just awesome in the true sense of the word. And just as we were getting ready to head out for the bike ride, my partner proposed (I enthusiastically said yes). The whole experience was perfect. You may not get engaged up there (or you might… you never know) but you will have one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
