Peterhead Prison Museum
Your 5-star, multi-award-winning visitor attraction is located within the former HM Convict Prison, Peterhead. This unique institution holds several distinctions: it was Scotland's only "Convict" prison, meaning sentences involved "penal servitude"; it housed Britain's first "state owned" railway; and it was the site of the only domestic siege on mainland UK where the Special Air Service was deployed, following a four-day hostage situation in 1987. Prepare to have all your senses stimulated as you explore the galleries and halls. The visual elements are striking, while the award-winning audio tour immerses you in historical moments through the stories of former officers. Your sense of smell will also be heightened at specific points along the route. Follow in the footsteps of both former officers and inmates of "Scotland's Toughest Jail," often referred to as "Scotland's Alcatraz." This is a truly unforgettable experience that will remain with you for years to come.

Reliving the past
Dowell_M, October 2026
The prison has been kept as it was; wee bit chilly; the audio guide is good; you can go your own way; the cafe is warm and welcoming; the signposting is effective; it's a memorable experience; not overpriced.

Very interesting with a lovely cafe
JulieM5526, October 2026
The staff at the cafe made our day very special. The service was so friendly and the food was amazing, My grandsons said the hot chocolate was the best they'd ever had and I would have loved their recipe for the pumpkin soup. I could have spent much longer looking round but the boys are only 4 and 6 they had seen all they wanted in 1 and a half hours.

Brilliant tour for history
400darrenu, October 2026
The experience was well worth it. Paid a bit more to get the hour and a half guided tour and it was brilliant to get a tour from someone who used to work when the prison was open. There were around 10 of us for the tour and the guide was absolutely brilliant and it felt like they added so much value.

Fascinating, Eye-Opening and Well Worth a Visit
W8016JFmichellem, October 2026
I’ve been planning to visit for years and finally booked a guided tour for today which did not disappoint! Our tour was led by former prison officer Davie who gave a real insight to working in the prison with tales of some infamous prisoners, using humour as well as empathy to paint the picture. Will definitely return and 100% recommend to all ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
