Ribat of Monastir
This is the oldest and most significant defensive structure built along the Maghreb coast by Arab conquerors in the early Islamic period.
Founded in 796, the Ribat has undergone several renovations throughout the medieval era.
Originally quadrilateral, it comprises four main buildings surrounding two internal courtyards.
Besides the small cells for 'warrior monks' who combined military duties with prayer and contemplation, the Ribat contains two prayer rooms.
The larger prayer room now displays rare artifacts from religious and medieval times.
A spiral staircase with a hundred steps leads to the watchtower, offering panoramic views of Monastir and the sea, and from where luminous signals were once exchanged at night with neighboring ribats.
