We commence our adventure at Otari-Wilton’s Bush, a hundred-hectare sanctuary of ancient and regenerating forest, and New Zealand’s sole botanical garden dedicated exclusively to native flora. Recognized as a six-star Garden of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, Otari-Wilton’s Bush offers a glimpse into the landscape encountered by early Māori and European settlers. As you cross the skybridge, enjoy panoramic views above the canopy while your guide introduces you to endemic flora and fauna and the challenges they face for survival. We frequently spot native birds such as Tui, Kaka, Kakariki, Kereru, and occasionally Karearea, species that were nearly extinct in the Wellington region just 25 years ago.

2 South Coast Exploration via Terawhiti Station
Next, we journey through the suburbs towards the south coast. Diverting from the main road, we utilize our private access through Terawhiti Station, one of New Zealand's oldest and largest stations. You'll likely encounter sheep, cows, and goats during the ascent, followed by spectacular views across the Cook Strait, Kaikoura Ranges, and the South Island from the summit. We then travel along the ridgeline road constructed for the impressive Project West Wind, a wind farm with 62 turbines generating enough electricity to power the entire Wellington region. This city, famously known as 'Windy Welly,' owes its nickname to these conditions. Your guide will explain how this project was vital for the farm's operation amidst challenging environments, adding another layer to Terawhiti's rich history.
· 1 h 30 min · Admission included
3 Coastal Discovery and Seal Colony
As we begin our descent towards sea level, the Karori Rock Lighthouse will appear in the distance, often referred to as the 'leaning lighthouse.' Erected in 1915 after the sinking of the SS Penguin, this decommissioned 19m tower was among New Zealand's first automated lighthouses, and yes, it does lean! You'll witness this firsthand as we reach the coast and navigate the rocky, sandy track towards Tongue Point and the New Zealand Fur Seal colony. Upon arrival, we'll disembark to explore the beach and observe these charming creatures in their natural habitat as they bask, play, and swim. Maintaining a respectful distance for their safety and ours, your guide will discuss the history, ecology, and conservation efforts that have contributed to their population recovery. Enjoy light refreshments while capturing photos and watching ferries traverse between New Zealand's two main islands.

Fantastic Coast Tour!
WilliamW_E, September 2026
We were prepared for what we were sure was going to be a miserable day as we reach Wellington amidst pouring rain and gusty winds. But thankfully we stayed the course and Graham picked us up for what will be an unforgettable tour. Graham was fantastic and he definitely earned respect for handling the drive through some brutal weather to get us out to the coast. The scenery though was surreal as the rain and fog made the slow drive through the immense wind turbines/rugged farmland a drive through a Salvador Dali exhibit. Graham navigated us down to the coast but the winds were freezing the slowing rain to the windshield. Graham was awesome and had some coffee and tea available. We sat a few moments chatting then finally the storm broke and we were awarded a view of the fur seals. What we thought was one or two ended up being a dozen plus. But the sight that mesmerized us was the sheer power of the surf raging against the rocky shoreline. That fury will be a memory that lasts forever. With our viewing complete Graham headed us back to town for a misty walkthrough the Otari-Wilton's Bush. Graham - thanks for sticking with us and safely getting us through that storm! We thoroughly enjoyed this experience and you will too though you may have to time it right, and pay Graham a bit extra 😊, if you want to see version we were privileged to see!
Response from the operator · Nathan C What an adventure, William! Sounds like the weather gave you quite a show. Great to hear Graham looked after you so well and you got to see the seals and the wild coastline at its most dramatic. I’m sure Graham will appreciate your kind words!

Our tour guide was very informative, the views were so surreal. We had a good day with probably 100 seals on shore. Im sure that's not every day thing but we were very fortunate. It was amazing and a great outing. Would do it 10x over.
Response from the operator · Nathan C Thanks, Holly! You were so lucky to see that many seals! What a sight to take in. Sounds like you had a pretty special day on the coast!

Seal Coast Safari-excellent!!!
Leslie_L, September 2026
Seal coast Safari was an amazing trip! Amazing plants and trees at the Ontario-Wilton’s Bush. Our tour guide Graham was very knowledgeable and answered our many questions. The drive through a farm up and down the switchbacks and the down down die to the coast was filled with amazing vistas. Once down in the beach we were right there with the Fur Seals. Wonderful. The wind was intense and invigorating and the sea was turbulent and powerful from the currents and high wind. Again, Graham answered our many questions about the land , the sea, the seals! We also saw an Arctic Tern and her chick as we were leaving! Wow!! We highly recommend this tour!
Response from the operator · Nathan C Thanks, Leslie! Sounds like you had quite an adventure out there! Graham will be chuffed to hear your kind words. Seeing the seals, the wild coastline and even an Arctic tern and her chick makes for a pretty special day.
