About the activity

This tour begins with a pickup at our designated location in Gatlinburg, TN. We will travel in comfortable, eco-friendly vans to our first stop: the remnants of a resort town that vanished over a century ago. Here, we will delve into the history of logging in the Smoky Mountains, the lives of early Appalachian pioneers, and the establishment of the national park. Following this, we will ascend the mountains via one of the most picturesque roads in the southeastern United States. Along the way, we'll pause at scenic overlooks for photo opportunities, questions, and to interpret the surrounding landscape. Our journey culminates at Newfound Gap, situated at an elevation of 5,000 feet, marking the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. At this significant site, we will learn about the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail and the location where President Franklin Roosevelt officially dedicated the park in 1940.
