Alles was perfect qua organisatie en gids! Zeer aanbevolen! We hebben het ophaalpunt gekozen bij het boeken - geen probleem. Timing, gids en ervaring uitstekend. Retourreis van Krakow Blu Radisson 6. 5 uur. We namen eigen eten mee, maar de gids contacteerde ook 24 uur van tevoren om een pakket aan te bieden.

Een must ... maar wees voorbereid

Een must voor iedereen die Krakau bezoekt. De busreis naar de locatie is vrij aangenaam, maar wees voorbereid op wat verontrustende gebouwen en informatie. Wordt erg druk met studenten tijdens piekuren en ze kunnen een beetje onbeleefd zijn. Beperkte voedselopties terwijl je er bent. De gids was ook onze chauffeur en was helemaal briljant.

Een dag die ik nooit zal vergeten.

Ik vind het vreemd om dat zelf te zeggen dat mijn groep (in totaal 8) genoten heeft van onze dagbezoek aan Auschwitz, omdat 'genoten' niet het juiste woord is. Het waren veel, veel dingen, maar plezierig is er niet een van, maar dat komt niet door externe factoren zoals de gids, of problemen met ophaal- en afleverpunten.
Het was niet plezierig puur omdat het eigenlijk niet bedoeld is.
Het is echter prikkelend, emotioneel, inzichtelijk en somber. Ik ga niet in detail ingaan op de tentoonstellingen die ze hebben (of hadden tijdens mijn bezoek), omdat ik denk dat het belangrijk is dat iedereen het voor zichzelf ziet, zonder verwachtingen of voorafgaande waarschuwing.
Deze specifieke tour had mijn groep van 8 plus nog eens 15 of 20 anderen. We kregen allemaal blauwe stickers, een headset en een ontvanger die draadloos was verbonden met de microfoon van de gids. De gids die we hadden was geweldig; ze was deskundig, lokaal in de omgeving en had familieleden die tijdens de oorlog in het kamp waren gehouden. Elke keer dat ze sprak, kon je de emotie in haar stem voelen. Een rondleiding, naar mijn mening, is de enige manier om het te zien.
Mijn groep werd opgehaald van mijn accommodatie in Plac Nowy om 06: 50, en we keerden terug naar dezelfde plek rond 14: 00 . Het eerste deel van Auschwitz duurt ongeveer 1 uur en 45 minuten. We stapten toen weer in de minibus en reisden 10 minuten naar nabijgelegen Birkenau. De Birkenau-tour duurt nog eens ongeveer 1 uur. De reistijd vanaf onze accommodatie in de Joodse Wijk was net iets meer dan een uur. In totaal duurde het misschien wel ongeveer 6 uur van ophalen in de ochtend tot terug laten afzetten in de middag.
Het is een lange dag. Het is emotioneel. Het is vermoeiend. Er is veel lopen en veel trappen.
Er zijn automaten, maar niets anders.
Maar als je in Krakau bent, denk ik dat het essentieel is dat je gaat. Documentaires, films, schoolleerkrachten, boeken... ze kunnen je maar tot op zekere hoogte vertellen, maar die gruweldaden zelf zien is niet alleen belangrijk, ik vind het noodzakelijk.
Dit is geen oud geschiedenis. Dit was niet honderden jaren geleden.
Dit is, voor sommige mensen, één generatie verwijderd van hun eigen. Dit is moderne geschiedenis en iedereen die de kans heeft, zou het moeten zien.

You expressed something that many visitors feel very strongly — “enjoyable” is simply not the right word for an experience like Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is emotional, confronting, thought-provoking and deeply sombre, but also incredibly important 📚🕯️.

Books, documentaries and films can teach us an enormous amount, but standing in these places provides a perspective that is very difficult to obtain in any other way. This is not distant history, and preserving the memory of the victims and understanding what happened remains essential ❤️🕯️
