The tour begins at our base near the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in South Iceland. We start by going over the tour plan and safety instructions.
From the base, we will cross some small rivers and head down to the black lava sand fields, formed by the dormant Katla volcano.
Down by the black beach, we'll stop to enjoy the amazing view of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the coast stretching to the southernmost tip of Iceland, the small peninsula Dyrhólaey.
We then proceed along the coast to the famous aircraft wreck. From there, we continue to the Jökulsá river and up to the foot of the mountain.
On our return journey, we will follow the mountain back to the base.
The ATV experience itself lasts approximately 2 hours. You will ride 2 people per ATV, with one driver and one passenger.
If you are traveling alone or in an odd-numbered group (3, 5, 7, etc.), there is an additional charge payable locally for single riders.
The adventure offers stunning photo opportunities in good weather, so don't forget your camera!
You will be provided with everything needed for a safe and comfortable ride. No ATV experience is required, and the skill level for this activity is considered 'easy'.

Ride of your life!

Experience of a lifetime and we owe it our amazing guide, Jordy. From the beginning of taking care to make sure we were warm and understanding the machine and safety. As experienced riders we were worried this would be cookie cutter and it was the furthest thing from! The adventure took our breath away. And the warmth and kindness from our guide, Jordy, was top notch. Can’t wait to return again to explore more!

We did a black sands ATV tour with Bjarki Bjarnason and he was an incredible guide! So knowledgeable about the volcanic activity in the area and gave a full run down at the first stop. The drive was incredible - so much fun. Perfect start to the morning!

Emotion and safety on a quad bike ride
57s_lviab, October 2026
I loved the quad bike tour through the black sands! We did the 1-hour tour and it was very rewarding, because at the chosen time (4:00 PM - 5:00 PM) there was no one else. Our guide, Jordy Vaesen, was excellent and made the experience even more special, he explained everything, answered questions, and kept us safe throughout the time, including during the river crossing, which was more swollen due to the rains.
Response from the operator · Reykjavík Excursions Dear Traveler,
Thank you so much for your fantastic review! We’re delighted that you enjoyed the quad bike adventure and that Jordy made the experience both exciting and safe, even during the river crossing. We’ll be sure to pass your kind words on to him!
Warm regards,
Patricia
