Civilian Control Zone (CCZ)
The Civilian Control Zone (CCZ) is a buffer area located just south of the DMZ. While not part of the actual DMZ, it remains under strict control by the South Korean military.
Established after the Korean War, it was designed to restrict civilian access for security purposes and acts as an additional protective layer before reaching the DMZ.
Why is it restricted?
Entry into the CCZ is controlled because it is very close to North Korea, contains military facilities and surveillance systems, and may have landmines and sensitive infrastructure.
Visitors must join an authorized tour, pass through military checkpoints, and present a passport or ID.
