From Seoul, the Demilitarized Zone is visited on an organised tour, for a day or a half-day. The DMZ is the buffer zone created by the Korean War armistice agreement in 1953 to separate North Korea and South Korea. As a military zone, it imposes its rules: passport compulsory, times that can change, photos sometimes forbidden.
Four tours listed on WizardTrip are rated between 4.9 and 5 out of 5 (checked on 17 October 2026). They share a common core and differ in their options.
What you will see
The following sites appear in most programmes. The Third Tunnel (the Second Tunnel on Mondays with PLK Travel), the Dora Observatory and Imjingak Park feature in all four tours.
- Imjingak Park, on the banks of the Imjin River, with artillery pieces and relics of the Korean War, and the locomotive nicknamed the "Iron Horse", a symbol of the railway cut between the two Koreas.
- Freedom Bridge, crossed in 1953 by prisoners of war returning to South Korea: 12,773 according to one listing, nearly 13,000 according to the others.
- The Third Infiltration Tunnel, discovered in 1978 and 1,635 metres long, about 2 metres high and wide according to the listings. The descent is through a steep, narrow passage.
- The Dora Observatory, rebuilt in 2018, where binoculars let you see North Korea, the village of Kijong-dong and the city of Kaesong.
- Unification Village (Tongilchon), a farming community in the civilian control zone, where residents live under special rules.

The most reviewed: tunnel, observatory and JSA museum
With more than 52,000 reviews, this is the most reviewed DMZ tour on WizardTrip (checked on 17 October 2026). The five options listed on its page include the JSA museum, devoted to Panmunjom and the Joint Security Area. The listing is clear: access to the JSA itself is restricted, and the museum is the closest you can get.
The options range from 7 hours (DMZ and museum) to 10 hours (all options: a defector's testimony and the red Gamaksan suspension bridge). One option replaces that bridge with the Majang Lake bridge. The guide speaks English or Chinese, and pickup is at a major metro station in the centre, near your hotel. The return to the hotel is not included.
A defector's testimony at the heart of the visit
For many travellers, the highlight is meeting a North Korean defector, who tells of life in the North and of escaping, then answers questions. All four tours offer it, as standard or depending on the option chosen.
The PLK Travel tour begins at the Mangbaedan altar, before the ID check at the entrance to the DMZ, then organises the meeting in its own centre devoted to North Korea. The "Essential" option lasts 6 hours, without a bridge; the 9-hour options add the Mount Gamaksan bridge (a 15-minute climb) or the Majang Lake bridge. A premium option limits the group to 13 people, in a minibus. The guide speaks English or Japanese. The listing promises a tour with no compulsory shopping stop.
The Seoul City Tour visit includes the meeting in all its options: 7 hours without a bridge, 8 hours with the Gamaksan bridge or the Majang Lake bridge. It ends at City Hall station. The guide speaks English, Chinese or Japanese; for the latter two languages, the listing requires at least 3 participants, otherwise the tour is in English.
The same operator offers a second listing, focused on the DMZ with no shopping stop, with an English-speaking guide. Its description also mentions Dorasan Station and the Odu Unification Observatory. Check the chosen option on the listing, because its options also include the meeting with a defector.
The rules to know before you go
PLK Travel advises against its tour for pregnant women and people with back problems or a fragile cardiovascular condition; it asks for average physical fitness. Bring comfortable shoes for the descent into the tunnel and dress appropriately, as the DMZ remains a military zone.
Which tour to choose?
- You want to understand the history of Panmunjom: the tour with the JSA museum.

- You have half a day: the 6-hour "Essential" option.
- You want to end on a landscape: an option with the Gamaksan or Majang Lake bridge.
