Taj Mahal from Delhi: Train Day Trip, Private Tour or City Tour

Four tours listed on WizardTrip are compared: the fast train to Agra, the private car day and two tours of Delhi. Here is which one to choose according to your time and your schedule.

A Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi fits into a 12-hour day, by train or private car. Four tours listed on WizardTrip are compared here: two lead to Agra, two tour Delhi itself. Their listings have between 4,544 and 5,525 reviews, with ratings of 4.9 out of 5 (as of 18 October 2026).

The article compares times, meals, entry fees and options. It settles the choice between the train and the car to Agra, then says which Delhi tour to pick for a half day.

Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi: what to know

Both Agra tours visit the Taj Mahal, built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. They also visit Agra Fort, made of red sandstone and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Depending on the option, they add the tomb of Itimad-Ud-Daulah, nicknamed the “Baby Taj.”

The private tour listing warns that the Taj Mahal draws crowds. It places the best time at sunrise, or during the cooler months from October to March. It adds that the interior is closed every Friday for prayer: a riverside viewpoint replaces it. The train listing does not mention this closure.

The listings contradict each other on skip-the-line access. The train listing announces skip-the-line entry tickets. The private tour listing states that there is no skip-the-line system at the monuments.

The train tour: the Gatimaan Express to Agra

The train tour takes the Gatimaan Express, presented by the listing as India’s fastest train. It has 4,703 reviews and a rating of 4.9 out of 5. A driver picks you up between 6:30 am and 7:00 am, at your hotel in the Delhi area or at the airport. At the airport, he waits for you at exit gate no. 4 of Terminal 3. He then drives you to Nizammuddin station.

The train leaves at 8:00 am and arrives in Agra at 9:50 am. The guide meets you outside the train car. The itinerary has about 3 hours at the Taj Mahal, then about 1 hour at Agra Fort.

Lunch is an unlimited buffet at a 5-star hotel in Agra. Two optional stops follow, depending on the time available. The first is Itimad-Ud-Daulah. The second is Mehtab Bagh, which offers the rear view of the Taj Mahal from the other bank of the Yamuna. The return train leaves Agra at 5:50 pm and arrives in Delhi around 7:30 pm.

Two options exist, in an air-conditioned train car of 1st class or 2nd class. Entry fees, the guide, lunch and pickup are included in both, and the train ticket includes meals. The guide speaks French, English and German, among others.

Christian gives the tour 4 out of 5. He warns in September 2026: “Be prepared for a shop visit though... they will stop anyway, but there was no pressure to buy things.”

The private car tour: leaving as early as 2:30 am for sunrise

The private tour lasts 12 hours, in an air-conditioned private car with a driver. It has 4,544 reviews and a rating of 4.9 out of 5. The itinerary can be customized.

You choose the time. A departure at 2:30 am gets you to the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Otherwise, pickup is between 3:00 am and 10:00 am. It takes place at any hotel, residence or airport in the Delhi area. Three airports are cited: Delhi (IGI), Hindon and Noida International, at Jewar. The private guide joins you near the first site, in Agra.

The itinerary has about 3 hours at the Taj Mahal, 1 hour at Agra Fort and 45 minutes at the Baby Taj. The listing describes this tomb as the first Mughal structure built entirely in marble.

Three options exist. “From Delhi: Tickets included” excludes meals. “From Delhi: Tickets and meals” adds them. “From Agra: Tickets included” is for those already staying there. The meal option serves breakfast or lunch depending on the departure time. The venue is a 5-star hotel or an upscale restaurant.

The vehicle depends on the group. A sedan seats 1 to 2 people, a minivan 3 to 4, an SUV 5. A Tempo Traveller takes 6 to 12 people, a minibus or a bus more. Tolls, fuel, bottled water and umbrellas are provided. Show up at the meeting point 15 minutes before departure.

Visiting Delhi instead of Agra: the two tours of the old and new city

If the Taj Mahal doesn’t fit into your stay, two guided tours of Delhi exist. Each offers three options. The first is a 4-hour half day in the old city, the second a half day in the new city. The third is a full 7-hour day covering both.

The old city includes the Jama Masjid mosque, the Bangla Sahib Sikh temple and the Khari Baoli spice market. A tuk-tuk ride through the Chandni Chowk bazaars is added.

The new city includes Humayun’s Tomb, India’s first garden tomb and a UNESCO-listed site. It also includes the Lotus Temple, a Baha’i house of worship inaugurated in 1986, and the Agrasen Ki Baoli stepwell. In both cases, you drive past the Red Fort, India Gate, Parliament and Rashtrapati Bhavan without stopping.

The Lotus Temple is closed on Monday: both listings then replace it with Qutub Minar. The air-conditioned private car, the local guide, bottled water and entry fees are included, but not meals or tips.

Delhi tour with a break at Connaught Place

The first Delhi tour has 5,525 reviews and a rating of 4.9 out of 5, the most in the group. It adds 45 minutes at Connaught Place. The guide recommends restaurants there serving Mughal cuisine and international dishes, with vegetarian options. Its guide speaks Mandarin, among other languages, which the second listing does not cite.

David, who rates this tour 4 out of 5 in September 2026, notes many drive-bys of the monuments without stopping. He nonetheless judges them necessary: “with Delhi traffic and all the places to see, it was necessary for an Old/New Delhi tour.”

Delhi tour with a similar itinerary, without Connaught Place

The second Delhi tour has 4,711 reviews and a rating of 4.9 out of 5. Its route is almost identical, without the break at Connaught Place, with 45 minutes at Humayun’s Tomb and 45 minutes at the Lotus Temple.

With children or in a wheelchair?

All four listings indicate a wheelchair-accessible tour suited to all fitness levels. The private tour and Delhi tour listings accept strollers and baby carriages, and offer specialized infant seats. The train listing mentions specialized baby seats.

When to book, and what if your hotel is not listed?

Confirmation is instant on all four listings. The train one advises booking in advance to get the class you want. The private tour one advises it to get a precise pickup time.

If your hotel does not appear, three listings say to click “My hotel is not listed” on the payment page. You then enter its name. They also ask for flight details for an airport pickup.

Which one should you choose?

  • You want to limit time on the road: the train tour, which links Delhi to Agra in 1 hour 50 minutes according to the listing.
  • You want to see the Taj Mahal at sunrise: the private tour, with a departure from Delhi at 2:30 am.
  • You are traveling in a group: the private tour, whose vehicle adapts to more than 12 travelers.
  • You have half a day: one of the two Delhi tours, in the old city or in the new one.

For the rest of your stay, the city’s tours and excursions are gathered on the Things to do in New Delhi page. More ideas for India are on its page.
