3 Monasterboice Monastic Site
Monasterboice, or Mainistir Bhuithe, was established in the 5th century by St. Buithe.
The site features the remnants of two 14th-century churches and a 10th-century Round Tower, but it is most renowned for its intricate Celtic High Crosses.
The Round Tower, approximately 28 meters high, is exceptionally well-preserved and was likely constructed shortly after 968, sustaining damage in a fire in 1098.
The three High Crosses, dating from the 10th century, are part of the scriptural group, depicting scenes from the Bible.
Muiredach's High Cross, standing at 5.5 meters, is considered the finest high cross in all of Ireland, adorned with biblical carvings from both the Old and New Testaments. It is named after Abbot Muiredach mac Domhnaill, who passed away in 923.

Awesome Neolithic sites
WWUPamela, October 2026
Driver/guide Matt from Hilltop Treks was very knowledgeable. The site-specific guides and visitor center were excellent and have a lot of information. Newgrange can be viewed at a distance from there if you don't want to take their bus to Knowth & Newgrange. All of the sites visited were incredible, even Monasterboice in the rain at the end of the day - dress for the weather!

Visit the Cradle of Irish Civilization
Moira_R, October 2026
Newgrange and Knowth are awesome-inspiring monuments to a sophisticated Neolithic society. Tickets must be arranged for ahead of time.
Our tour company, Hilltoptreks, made the whole trip seamless. Our wonderful driver, Richard Tynan, picked us up in the center of Dublin, and made the 1 hour trip shorter with entertaining stories about the sites we passed.
Once we finished with Newgrange, we then proceeded to explore the “Palace of the Boyne”. Richard has captivating stories about two ancient monasteries, Irish crosses, the Great Famine and the seminal Battle of the Boyne. Thanks for a terrific visit to the cradle of Irish civilization.
Response from the operator · Terry-hilltoptreks Thank you very much Moira for the excellent and detailed review.

This tour is well worth it!
Christine_H, October 2026
The tour was fabulous and our guide Kevin was fun and knowledgeable. This tour requires walking including walking on uneven surfaces, stairs, and climbing in and out of the bus and the narrow tomb passageway. Wear comfortable clothes and hiking shoes or similar. Bring a rain jacket. There is time for lunch at the visitor center mid-tour, and the driver makes a stop at the service station on the way back to Dublin. Not only does the tour bring you to the Neolithic sites, but to the ruins of an ancient abbey and a fascinating cemetery with many tall stone crosses and 30m high stone tower.
I would take this tour again. It was very insightful and the history of it all is fascinating!
Response from the operator · Terry-hilltoptreks Thank you very much Tina for the detailed and excellent review.
