Culinary Tourism Field Trip: Taste of Downtown Beale Street Food Tour
L8574BUmaryh, October 2026
We went to four restaurants and got to try their food. We also went to a fudge shop and sampled the fudge. The first one was Dyer's cafe, and we tried half of a smash burger. I was hungry and it was good, it tasted like a burger. The next one was Rum Boogie Café. The gumbo was thick, spicy, and I thought maybe a little salty. It had alligator in it among other things. The rice was sort of crunchy. Apparently, Memphis gumbo is supposed to have okra in it. We went to King's Palace Cafe where we ate chicken wings. They were giant! At Blues City Café we had ribs, coleslaw, and baked beans. I liked the ribs, how they were so tender and the how flavorful the bark was on top. At the Rum Boogie Café there were guitars hanging from the ceiling, and guitars in wooden coffins that were signed by people who played in the restaurant. The restaurant Alfred's had a monkey as a pet. He was a capuchin who always stole stuff and they think that he buried his hoard in a field behind the restaurant which is now the FedEx Forum. She told us about this facade, it's being held up by steel beams, and there are tree laws that make it so they can't tear it down. The building was many different things including a courthouse, and it burned down, and the bank told them they had to keep up all the buildings on Beale street. The owner of the restaurant next door, I think he bought it, and he planted Chinese cherry trees, which are protected in all fifty states, so if you tear down the facade you might hurt the trees, so you can't tear down the facade. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. We would eat at one place and then walk to the next place, that was good so we wouldn't get too full too fast. Taylor bused our tables at some of the restaurants. I think this tour is good for the experiential food traveler. I would recommend it because you get to try many different things, that maybe you haven’t had before. Also if it is a road trip and you have been sitting down for a while you walk from place to place and stand while the tour guide talks. I also think that it's for people traveling in a group because it's a chance to visit. I have it two stars on Meeting or Pickup because I had trouble getting there so I was thirty minutes late.
