From Cusco, two day tours lead to very different landscapes. One covers the Inca Sacred Valley, with its ruins and a buffet lunch. The other climbs to Vinicunca, Rainbow Mountain, at an altitude of 5,020 meters.
The two tours compared here are listed on WizardTrip. The Sacred Valley has 5,596 reviews and a rating of 5.0 out of 5 (as of 18 October 2026). Rainbow Mountain has 4,052 reviews and a rating of 4.9 out of 5. The article decides between them based on effort, altitude and the entrance fees to pay on top of the price.
Sacred Valley or Rainbow Mountain: what you need to know
The two days have little in common. The Sacred Valley takes 10 hours between Pisac, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. According to the listing, these three sites lie at about 3,300, 2,870 and 2,790 meters. Rainbow Mountain takes 12 hours: the hike starts at 4,326 meters and reaches Vinicunca at 5,020 meters.
Altitude weighs on the choice. The valley listing states that most of the route lies at or below the altitude of Cusco. The Rainbow Mountain listing advises acclimatizing in Cusco for a few days before the visit. If you do both, that argues for starting with the valley.
Sacred Valley day trip from Cusco: Pisac, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo
For the day trip to the Sacred Valley, group tours meet at the Plaza Regocijo, in Cusco. The meeting time is between 7:45 and 8 am, near the fountain in the square. Arriving late is treated as a “no-show,” with no refund.
The listing contradicts itself on one point. The group option in English promises shared transport from and to the hotel. The other sections set the meeting point at the square. Confirm the location with the operator. A September 2025 review, rated 4 out of 5, notes precisely this confusing communication about pickup.
The program starts with a panoramic viewpoint (15 min). It continues with the Pisac archaeological site (45 min) and its craft market (40 min). Next come lunch in Urubamba (1 hour) and the Ollantaytambo site (45 min). Lunch is a buffet at the Don Angel restaurant, with dishes from Peru’s three regions: coast, highlands and jungle. Drinks are not included.
There are two ways to end the day. To return to Cusco, the departure from Ollantaytambo is at 5:45 pm, with arrival around 7 pm. Hotel drop-off is limited to hotels in the historic center, subject to the operator’s confirmation.
To continue to Machu Picchu, drop-off is in the main square of Ollantaytambo, about a 5-minute walk from the train station. The listing assumes you have booked a train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. It asks you to state the time of that train.
Three options exist: a group tour with an English-speaking guide, a bilingual Spanish and Portuguese tour, and a private tour. The group has 17 people at most. The listing advises booking ahead, especially in high season. On board the air-conditioned vehicle, a bottle of water is offered and the satellite Wi-Fi works.
Reviews are almost all positive. Nicole writes in April 2025: “The pace of the tour was perfect.” Still, expect shop stops. A June 2026 review mentions a textile factory at the end of the day. A 2-out-of-5 review, from August 2026, mentions one shop in Pisac and one in Chinchero. Its author finds the tour more commercial than cultural.
Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley: 12 hours of hiking
The day trip to Rainbow Mountain starts at 4:30 am, with hotel pickup in the city center. The exact time depends on where the hotel is. A two-hour drive through the South Valley leads to Cusipata, where a breakfast buffet is served.
From the trailhead, at 4,326 meters, about 2 hours of moderate walking remain. The group reaches Vinicunca around 10:30 am. The listing places the setting in the Vilcanota mountain range, near Ausangate, which peaks at 6,377 meters. It mentions herds of llamas and alpacas. After a lunch buffet in Cusipata, arrival in Cusco is around 4:30 pm, near the main square.
The price includes breakfast, lunch, trekking poles and oxygen assistance. It includes neither the Vinicunca entrance fee nor the Red Valley one. The Red Valley is optional: tell your guide before the hike. The walk costs nothing extra, but the entrance fee is paid separately. A vegetarian meal is requested when you book.
The group has 18 people at most, with a guide who speaks English or Spanish. Effort is the main subject of the reviews. Maximilian, in September 2026: “The hike is quite difficult, especially if you also want to do the red valley part.” He adds that many travelers suffered from altitude sickness on the way back.
Other reviews are more reserved. In July 2026, a traveler (3 out of 5) criticizes the guide for getting ahead of the group. He also finds the driver too fast. A May 2026 review (4 out of 5) describes a very crowded mountain and prefers the Red Valley.

What happens if it rains?
The two listings give different rules. For the Sacred Valley, the tour runs even in the rain, which is common in the Andes. It may be canceled in extreme conditions or for lack of participants, and the operator then offers another date or a full refund. For Rainbow Mountain, the listing states that the tour is not canceled in bad weather. A June 2026 review describes a mountain under rain and snow.
With children, or if you are not athletic?
The Sacred Valley suits all fitness levels, according to the listing. Children under 5 travel free if they do not take up a seat. Infant seats are available on request, and infants sit on an adult’s lap. Travelers with a heart condition or another serious medical problem should consult their doctor.
Rainbow Mountain requires at least a moderate fitness level. The listing advises against it for pregnant women, people with spine problems and those with poor cardiovascular health. It gives no minimum age. A June 2026 review mentions a horseback ride that the guide helped to arrange. The listing does not mention it: ask the operator whether this option exists.
