The Mekong: Where Life Slows Down & You Remember What Living Means

The Mekong: Where Life Slows Down & You Remember What Living Means
What does one actually want from life? The daily grind, endless deadlines, traffic jams and the suspicion that life has become one long to-do list?
Or do you occasionally just want to get away into the countryside and remember what it feels like to simply exist?
Ho Chi Minh City has chaos, colour, noise and enough magnificent food to keep you occupied for weeks. But to discover another side of Vietnam, you need to leave the city behind and head towards the mighty Mekong.
Enter Off The Beaten Track.
This was far more than a boat trip, a bicycle ride or a canoe excursion. It was a glimpse into everyday life along a river that feeds communities, supports livelihoods and quietly carries on regardless of the madness elsewhere.
We wandered through a local wet market, where muddy paths and flooded ground did nothing to interrupt the morning business. Vendors sold their goods, locals went about their routines, and nobody was putting on a show for visitors.
We were simply passing through somebody else’s ordinary morning. And somehow, that made it extraordinary.
Then came the river, the local waterways and the canoes. Away from the engines and tourist boats, we paddled quietly through narrow channels, passing homes, children playing and locals getting on with life.
No booming speakers. No rush to capture the perfect photograph. Just the sound of the paddle, the water and the countryside unfolding around us.
it was damn good.
We’ve become so accustomed to filling every spare moment with something. Notifications, music, conversation, another destination, another photograph. Yet here, the silence did all the talking.
A cold beer at a local home that doubled as a hardware shop was another unexpected highlight. No fancy hospitality, no curated experience. Just genuine smiles, a warm welcome and the simple pleasure of sitting down and enjoying the moment.
Later, we cycled through village paths and plantations, exchanging enthusiastic Xin chào greetings with locals. We probably butchered the pronunciation, but the smiles suggested we’d survived.
Moving slowly changes how you experience a place. In a car, you pass through it. On a bicycle, you begin to feel its rhythm.
The people we met and the generosity we experienced made the day feel genuine rather than manufactured. We weren’t there to conquer attractions or tick boxes. We were visitors, briefly welcomed into a world that existed long before we arrived.
Of course, rural life isn’t without its challenges, and there’s no need to romanticise it. But the connection to place, family and community made us reflect on what we sometimes lose in our relentless pursuit of convenience.
We spend so much time planning the next thing that we forget to appreciate the thing we’re already living.
One day in the Mekong won’t solve the world’s problems or turn us into enlightened beings who never check their phones again. Let’s not get carried away.
But it offers something worth taking home: perspective.
A quiet paddle. A cold beer. A smile from a stranger. Simple moments that become extraordinary when we give them the time and attention they deserve.
Off the beaten track, gave us far more than a day out. They helped us experience a little of the Mekong through the people who call it home, beyond the usual tourist trail and away from the city’s magnificent madness.
Eventually, we returned to HCMC, back to the horns, traffic and relentless noise. But we carried a little reminder with us.
Perhaps the real luxury isn’t the expensive hotel, the perfectly planned itinerary or the number of passport stamps.
Perhaps it’s simply having the time to slow down and appreciate where you are.
So take the detour. Talk to people. Eat the food. Get on the bloody bicycle.
Life isn’t waiting at the next destination. It’s happening right now.
Off the beaten track indeed gave us a whole day to remember that.
And now, back to the city. The noise awaits.
But tonight, I suspect we’ll hear it a little differently.
Go beyond the ordinary. Live beyond the itinerary. And for goodness sake, enjoy the journey.

Mekong Delta experience
KLMel, October 2026
We had a fun, interesting and informative day out with Lee and the team. The boat trip, kayaking and market visits were fantastic and gave us a true taste of life in Vietnam. The first portion of the bike ride down to the boat and the third leg after lunch were enjoyable, but the 20km main part of the ride was fast paced through the hottest part of the day and it was hard to take in the scenery. Our suggestion would be for the leader to slow down and stay with the group rather than waiting way ahead for us to catch up, so they could tell us about the places we were riding through, ideally stopping for photos. The kayaking was an amazing experience, passing local longboats and floating houses and was at a more leisurely pace. Lunch was delicious and the transport to and from the city was very comfortable. Lee had such interesting stories to tell about the country and people, too. Thank you!
