For a Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi, three full-day tours are listed on WizardTrip. All of them go through the Hoa Lu temples, Mua Cave and Tam Coc, by boat. They have 9,138, 5,185 and 4,736 reviews respectively, with ratings of 5.0, 4.9 and 5.0 out of 5 (as of 18 October 2026).

The sights are the same; the rest is not. What sets the tours apart is the vehicle and the group: the limousine van tour, the bus tour and the small-group day for 8 people. This article compares their length, entry fees, meals and price to tell you which one to book.

Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi: what to know

According to the listings, the three tours last 10 to 13 hours. Pickup is early, between 6:30 am and 7:45 am, in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

The stops are the same from one listing to the next. At Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s capital from 968 to 1010 according to one of them, you visit the King Dinh temple in about 45 minutes. At Mua Cave, about 500 steps lead to the top of Lying Dragon Mountain. The view stretches over the river, the mountains and the rice fields. At Tam Coc, a boat glides between limestone mountains, rice fields and caves. Two listings add Bich Dong Pagoda.

The limousine van tour: entry fees, lunch and bikes included

The limousine van tour lasts 11 hours. Pickup is between 7 am and 7:15 am in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The limousine van is air-conditioned and has Wi-Fi. There is also a meeting point at 7:15 am at the Mercure La Gare hotel, 94 Ly Thuong Kiet Street. According to the description, the group has a maximum of 9 guests. The listing’s technical section says 99: confirm this before booking.

The itinerary is timed. Hoa Lu is scheduled for 9:15 am and Mua Cave for 10:30 am, with its 500 steps. Lunch at noon is eaten in a local bungalow. A sampan sets off at 1:15 pm at Tam Coc and passes through three caves: Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba.

At 3 pm, a bike ride through rice fields and villages leads to Bich Dong Pagoda, built in 1428. The climb is 200 steps. The departure from Tam Coc is at 4 pm, after a farewell drink, for an arrival in Hanoi around 6:30 pm.

Included are the entry fees, a set Vietnamese lunch, the bikes, an English-speaking guide, bottled water and a conical hat. Breakfast, dinner and alcohol are at your own expense.

The bus tour: the cheapest, with entry fees to pay

The bus tour is the longest, at 12 to 13 hours, and the cheapest of the three. The guide speaks Vietnamese and English, and the group has a maximum of 25 people. Pickup is free between 7 am and 7:45 am in the Old Quarter. Elsewhere, the meeting point is the Hanoi Opera House, 1 Trang Tien Street, before 7:45 am.

From 1 July 2026, Vietnamese regulations restrict tourist buses from entering the Old Quarter. The listing announces a pickup point confirmed before departure, along streets such as Hai Bà Trưng or Tràng Thi. It also asks you to confirm the location 24 hours ahead, by WhatsApp, Zalo or email.

The itinerary begins with Hoa Lu, for 45 minutes. At 11:15 am comes a 30-minute bike ride, free and optional: anyone who doesn’t cycle waits at the restaurant. Lunch at 11:45 am offers regional dishes, including goat meat, always with a vegetarian option. The 1.5-hour bamboo boat ride leaves at 1 pm, and the climb up Mua Cave takes place at 4 pm. The bus leaves again at 5 pm for a return to the hotel around 7:30 pm.

Entry fees are not included in the base price. The listing calls them optional and payable on site. Hoa Lu costs 20,000 dong (about $0.80). Mua Cave charges 150,000 (about $6), and Tam Coc with the boat 250,000 (about $10). Brad, who gives 4 out of 5 in September 2026, finds that “the tour is more expensive than expected, but not significantly,” and would like all-inclusive prices.

The listing warns that the bike ride is not suitable for children under 2 or for people over 80 kg. It advises against the tour for travelers with spinal problems.

The small-group day of 8: scooter or jeep in the countryside

The small-group day limits the group to 8 travelers. Pickup is between 6:30 am and 6:45 am, at the hotel or at a meeting point. It is free from all hotels in the Old Quarter. The listing announces 10 to 11 hours. Its itinerary, however, plans a return between 6 pm and 6:30 pm, and the scooter option mentions 12 hours.

According to the listing, the early start avoids traffic, crowds and heat for the climb up Mua Cave. An alternative trail of 300 steps exists for anyone who doesn’t enjoy touristy hiking. The itinerary also mentions Tam Coc or Trang An, described as a recent addition to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Entry fees and lunch by the river are included. The boat ride at Tam Coc lasts 1.5 hours according to the list of inclusions and 2 hours according to the itinerary. In the afternoon, a 2-hour ride crosses the countryside. It is done with a driver, on a scooter, a Vespa or a motorbike, or in a Vietnamese army jeep.

On the way back, drop-off can be at the hotel, at Hoan Kiem Lake, at the Opera House or at the weekend night market. Tell your guide.

What happens if it rains?

All three listings provide for cancellation in bad weather. The one for the bus tour specifies that this applies to extreme weather conditions and that activities may otherwise be adjusted. Katelin took the limousine van tour in rainy weather and gives it 4 out of 5. Her September 2026 review says: “we couldn’t see one of the caves because of high water, but the tour itself was well organized.”

How fit do you need to be?

The listings for the limousine van tour and the bus tour say they suit all fitness levels. The one for the small-group day asks for at least a moderate level of fitness, because the tour involves hiking and cycling. It also advises against the tour for pregnant women and for people with spinal or cardiovascular problems. The limousine van one advises against the tour in case of cardiovascular problems. Plan for 500 steps at Mua Cave and 200 at Bich Dong Pagoda.

Which one should you choose?

  • You want entry fees, lunch and bikes included, in 11 hours: the limousine van tour.
  • You watch your budget and accept paying entry fees on site: the bus tour, the cheapest.
  • You prefer a group of 8 and the countryside by scooter or jeep: the small-group day.
  • You want a shorter climb up Mua Cave: the small-group day offers a 300-step trail.
