Washington DC at Night: Three Guided Tours of the Illuminated Monuments

Two bus tours and one trolley tour, 2.5 to 3 hours, to see the Washington DC monuments lit up: departures, stops, optional museum tickets, and the tour that suits each traveler.

For a night tour of the monuments in Washington DC, three guided outings are listed on WizardTrip. Two are by bus, one by open-air trolley. Together they have 17,543 reviews, with ratings of 4.6 to 4.7 out of 5 (as of 18 October 2026).

This article compares departure, length, walking stops, optional museum tickets and wheelchair access. It says which outing suits which traveler.

Washington DC at night: what to know

All three outings pass the illuminated monuments, including the White House, the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. They last 2.5 to 3 hours. Both buses leave at 7:30 pm, along Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The trolley leaves from Union Station or the Washington Welcome Center.

Enclosed bus or convertible minibus: the Navy Memorial tour

The bus tour from the Navy Memorial leaves at 7:30 pm sharp from the U.S. Navy Memorial, 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The meeting point is in front of the memorial, on the plaza with a fountain near the large Navy flags. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to check in. Rideshare cars often drop customers off on the other side of the block, the listing warns.

The outing lasts about 3 hours, for 50 passengers at most, on an enclosed, air-conditioned bus. An upgrade offers a convertible minibus with a glass roof, for fewer than 15 people. According to one section of the listing, the roof stays open from April to August; according to another, from April to September. It is glass-covered from October to March.

The guided stops last 15 to 20 minutes. They serve the White House, the Capitol, the World War II Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. Next come the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. Then the Korean War, Vietnam War and Marine Corps memorials. The Capitol and the White House can only be seen from the outside.

Included: the guide, the guided tour and bottled water. Not included: tips and luggage storage. The bus has no storage for strollers. The listing limits luggage to purses, briefcases and backpacks.

Wear comfortable shoes: the listing announces a moderate amount of walking. It mentions the Metro, Navy Memorial–National Archives station, Yellow and Green lines.

Tour with optional museum tickets: departure from the National Archives

The night tour of the National Mall leaves at 7:30 pm from 790 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, in front of the National Archives building. The bus parks near the corner of 9th Street NW. Look for the one marked “DC Guided Tours.” Be there by 7 pm at the latest: the listing states that the group does not wait for latecomers.

The listing recommends the Metro, to Archives–Navy Memorial–Penn Quarter station. It advises against driving: limited parking, heavy traffic. If you drive, arrive 1 hour ahead.

The outing lasts 3 hours, on an air-conditioned bus, for 50 people at most. It includes 10 main sites with a photo stop, including the White House, the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. More than 20 other sites are seen in passing, including the Washington Monument and Arlington National Cemetery. Stops last 15 to 20 minutes at the Capitol, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and the Tidal Basin. Monique, in October 2026, warns: “you won’t be able to get very close to the Capitol or the White House.”

Cherry blossom season, generally from late March to early April, adds a walk among the trees. Outside the blooming period, the stops at the memorials remain on the program. In December, the listing announces Christmas lights outside the White House and the Capitol.

At checkout, you can add a self-guided ticket: the Washington Monument, the Air and Space Museum or the African American museum. Each ticket is available alone, and the three are offered together. The Washington Monument ticket leads straight to the security check, which speeds up entry.

These tickets are not used the same evening. They are valid on the next available travel day, on the date and time set by the attraction. You do not choose them. The operator sends them by WhatsApp on the day of the tour: give a valid number. Once issued, they are non-refundable.

Open-air trolley: departure from Union Station or the Welcome Center

The monuments trolley tour lasts 2.5 hours, the shortest of the three outings. The trolley runs open-air and the English-speaking guide narrates the trip live. The group has 52 people at most. Booking is confirmed manually, versus instant confirmation for the other two.

You depart from one of two addresses, your choice. At Union Station (50 Massachusetts Avenue NE), the trolley waits in the Columbus Circle bus departure lane. It is the second lane from the front of the station. At the Washington Welcome Center, the address is 1001 E Street NW. Check in 30 minutes before. The listing does not give the tour time.

The trolley passes the Supreme Court, Capitol Hill, the Capitol, the Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument and the White House. The stops are concentrated in two areas:

  • Lincoln Memorial area: Vietnam memorial (5 minutes), then the Korean War memorial and the Lincoln Memorial (15 minutes each).
  • Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. memorials area: Tidal Basin (5 minutes), then each of the two memorials (15 minutes).

The listing announces more than 100 monuments and points of interest, anecdotes, historical facts and ghost stories. Included are the trolley, taxes and the guide. The exclusions listed are food, drinks, restrooms on board, Wi-Fi and tips.

What happens if it rains?

Two listings address this question. The bus with optional tickets leaves as planned, because the tour takes place outdoors, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. The tour is canceled in extreme weather. The trolley also leaves as planned: it is open-air, so dress accordingly.

Mary, who took the bus with tickets in October 2026, advises: “Don’t go if there is a chance of rain.” The Navy Memorial bus listing does not address rain. It provides for another date or a full refund if there are too few participants.

With children, a stroller or a wheelchair?

On all three outings, infants must sit on an adult’s lap. The Navy Memorial bus has no storage for strollers. The one with tickets accepts infants and young children in strollers, according to the listing.

For a wheelchair, only the trolley is listed as accessible: say so when booking. The Navy Memorial bus is not, and the other listing does not specify. Guide dogs are allowed on the Navy Memorial bus, service animals on the other two outings.

The bus with tickets asks for at least a moderate level of fitness and, according to the listing, is not suitable for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. The other two listings say they suit all levels.

Which one should you choose to see the Washington monuments at night?

  • You want a small group in a convertible: the Navy Memorial bus, with its upgrade to a minibus for fewer than 15 people.
  • You want to go up the Washington Monument or enter a museum: the tour with optional tickets.
  • You come in late March or early April: the same tour, with its walk among the cherry blossoms.
  • You travel in a wheelchair: the trolley, to be stated when booking.
  • You want the shortest outing: the trolley, 2.5 hours.

For the rest of your stay, the city’s shows, tours and day trips are gathered on the Things to do in Washington DC page. The country’s other activities are on the United States page.
